 4th Annual Success Sailing Festival

Saturday, August 19:         9:30 AM – 3 PM

                 9:30 AM             Meet and greet on upper deck w/ juice and snacks

               10:00 AM             Clinic:   Practice Sailing a Hobie Wave for Success

               12:00 PM             Picnic Lunch

                 1:00 PM              Racing or Free Sailing

                 2:15 PM             De-rigging

                 2:30 PM             Awards & Recognitions

 

Entry Fee $50 per team (Participant + Mentor/Coach)

  • Team consists of one Student/Sailor and one Mentor/Coach
  • Student Sailors should have an intellectually disability
  • Students Sailors ages 14+
  • Students Sailors should be capable of swimming with a life jacket and capable of climbing back into a boat from the water with minimal assistance (as in a man-overboard)
  • When bringing a “Mentor/Coach”, they should be familiar with sailing a catamaran and have an established rapport with the student-sailor.A “Mentor/Coach” will be provided upon request at registration.

 

Registration Fee Includes:

  • Entry to Races (Participation in races is NOT required)
  • Event Shirt for each student sailor
  • Free Use of Hobie Wave for clinic and races
  • Burger-Hot Dog Lunch w/ chips & Gatorade
  • Prizes for racing participants (not the mentor-coach)
  • Life jackets and sailing helmets provided upon request
  • On-water safety patrol
  • An open invitation for FREE practice on the following days.

      • Sunday, Aug 11, 11 AM – 1 PM (open w/ boats available from 10 AM- 5 PM for non-USSCMC registrants)

 

Clinic Format:

  • A group lesson will be given on shore providing tips on how to successfully sail a Hobie Wave.
  • Coaches and Students will be responsible to rig their assigned boat
  • A large team effort will have everyone help everyone to launch boats from beach to floating
  • The goal for the day is to have the student sailors drive the boats as the “skipper” while the coach/mentor rides as crew encouraging, instructing, and maintaining safety.When necessary, the coach/mentor will take the controls for safety.

 

Racing Format:

  • A Unified Team Approach will be used.Each team consists of a sailor with intellectual disabilities and an able-bodied coach/mentor.
  • The goal for the day is to have the student sailors drive the boat as the “skipper” while the coach/mentor rides as crew encouraging, instructing, and maintaining safety.
  • Racing will be run with a “beach start”, then rounding 2-3 marks, then finishing at the beach.
  • Prizes will be awarded based on those who drive the boat and trim the sails with no touch of controls by the mentor/coach.
  • Recognitions will be made for all who finish the course regardless of assistance from the mentor/coach.
